The Complete Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Travel Guide

Everything foreign travelers need to know before visiting Yunnan's most iconic peak

What is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain?

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山, Yùlóng Xuěshān) is the defining landmark of Lijiang, Yunnan — and one of the most breathtaking natural sights in all of China. Rising to a summit of 5,596 metres, the mountain's snow-capped peaks are visible from Lijiang's Old Town on a clear day, looming on the horizon like something out of a painting.

For the Naxi people, the indigenous community who have called this region home for centuries, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is sacred — a deity embodied in stone and ice. Its thirteen peaks, perpetually cloaked in snow, are said to represent a jade dragon lying across the sky.

For travelers, it's a place of extraordinary beauty: glaciers, turquoise alpine lakes, sweeping meadows, and an altitude that makes you feel like you're standing at the top of the world. This guide covers everything you need to plan your visit — from booking tickets (which is trickier than you'd expect) to what to pack and how to handle the altitude.
