If you're heading to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Lijiang, you’re probably wondering what to pack. Trust me, the weather up there is nothing like what you’ll find in the city, it’s unpredictable, chilly, and the altitude (up to 4,680 meters!) makes everything feel much colder. If you dress right, you’ll actually enjoy the experience.

Get it wrong, and you'll be shivering, uncomfortable, and wishing you’d brought that extra jacket.

Let’s break it down season by season, with real tips to keep you warm, comfortable, and honestly looking pretty good in your photos.

Why Your Clothes Matter

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain isn’t just another scenic spot. The temperature shifts are wild:

  • At the base: It can feel mild, even warm.

  • At the peak: Freezing. Sometimes below zero.

Plus, winds whip around and UV rays hit hard up here. The secret? Layer up so you can easily adjust as you climb.

How to Layer (The Simple Rule)

No matter what time of year you visit, stick to these three layers:

1. Base Layer

Thermal underwear or a heat-tech top

Anything that wicks moisture away

2. Middle Layer

Soft fleece or a warm sweater

3. Outer Layer

A down jacket or something windproof

This way, you can peel layers off as things warm up, or bundle up for the summit.

Footwear (Don’t Mess This Up)

The ground’s slick and uneven. Seriously, don’t even think about wearing sandals here.

Bring:

  • Waterproof hiking shoes or boots

  • Non-slip soles

Skip:

  • Sandals

  • Flat sneakers with zero traction

Sun Protection (It’s Not Optional)

The UV up high is intense, even when it’s cold.

Grab:

  • Sunglasses (snow glare is real)

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen

  • Lip balm

What to Wear Each Season

Spring (April–June) Cool at the base, cold up top.

Wear:

  • Light thermal shirt

  • Fleece or sweater

  • Medium jacket

  • Comfy pants

  • Sneakers or light hiking shoes

Summer (July–September) Warm below, chilly up high.

Wear:

  • T-shirt

  • Light jacket or windbreaker

  • Packable puffer jacket (yes, you’ll need this!)

  • Light pants

Autumn (October–November) Cold and windy, feels almost wintery.

Wear:

  • Thermal base layer

  • Sweater

  • Down jacket

  • Gloves and beanie

  • Warm pants

Winter (December–March) Freezing, gusty winds.

Wear:

  • Full thermal set

  • Thick down coat

  • Gloves, scarf, beanie

  • Waterproof boots

Extra Packing Tips

  1. Bring a small backpack for layers and snacks.

  2. Carry water.

  3. An oxygen can might help—the altitude’s no joke.

  4. You can rent jackets on-site, but bringing your own is more comfortable.

Where to Buy or Rent What You Need

Forgot something? Don’t panic! There are shops and rental stations everywhere.

1. Jacket Rentals at Cable Car Stations

Find them at: Glacier Park Cableway Station and shuttle/visitor centers.

  • You’ll get thick, bright jackets (usually easy to spot!)

  • Rentals run about 50 RMB.

  • Even if you brought a light jacket, rent another for the summit—trust me, the wind up there is stronger than you expect.

2. Oxygen Canisters

Available at visitor center shops, cable car waiting areas, even roadside stops. Oxygen is everywhere, but it’s cheaper in Lijiang. Buy before you head up. Even if you’re healthy, you might need a boost.

3. Mountain Base Shops

Find them near the visitor center and bus terminals. Here you can buy gloves, beanies, scarves, thick socks, snacks, water—basically, last-minute stuff.

4. What You Can’t Reliably Find

Don’t depend on finding these at the mountain base:

  • Good hiking shoes

  • Quality thermal base layers

  • Proper sunglasses

Pack these ahead of time, ideally from home or Lijiang.

5. Best Prep Stop: Lijiang Old Town

Swing by before heading up for better gear (clothes, oxygen cans, accessories) at lower prices.
